Compare behaviors

Two behaviors side by side — what tells them apart.

Negging

Manipulation

Negging is a put-down wearing a compliment's clothes. "You're pretty for someone who…", "I usually don't go for people like you." Each line lands as flattery and an insult at once, leaving you slightly off-balance and working to earn back approval. Done once it's a bad joke; done as a pattern it's a strategy to lower your confidence so theirs reads higher.

  • Backhanded compliments that sting more than they flatter
  • Subtle digs at your looks, taste, or intelligence
  • "Just being honest" used to excuse the jab
  • Leaves you working to win back their approval

Gaslighter

Manipulation

A Gaslighter doesn't just lie — they rewrite history to protect themselves. They deny things that happened, flip the timeline, and make you feel irrational for reacting normally. Over time you start trusting their version more than your own memory, which is exactly the point. The goal isn't winning the argument. It's making you stop trusting yourself.

  • Rewrites the timeline of what happened
  • Denies what was said, even mid-argument
  • Makes you doubt your own memory
  • "You're overreacting" or "that's not what I meant"
