Performative behavior is two-faced not by hiding something terrible, but by performing emotions and values for effect. Public warmth, private coldness. Calculated displays of feelings when there's an audience. What they say and how they act in front of others doesn't match what happens when no one's watching. The performance is real — the feeling behind it isn't.
